Prayer for October

O Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. You have been faithful and have preserved a people for yourself in every generation through the gospel. This month of October, we give you thanks for the truths of gospel rediscovered in the Reformation that have defined us and preserved us as a family of churches.

We give you thanks for Scripture Alone. We praise you for making yourself known, not just through creation and providence but also through your infallible Word. What could we have known about the seriousness of our sin and the greatness of your salvation apart from your Word? How great would be our darkness! Yet in your light, we see light.

We receive the authority of the Bible, that it is the Word of God, perfect, infallible, and inerrant. We rejoice in the clarity and sufficiency of the Bible, that it contains all we need to know you and live a life pleasing to you.

Let us be a people who cherish the Bible more than gold and long for it more than food and nourishment.

We give you thanks for Faith Alone. We have all strayed like sheep and cannot be made right with you through our obedience. We praise you for putting forth Christ as our substitute, so that we can receive forgiveness of sin and be declared righteous in your sight through faith alone. We turn away from resting in our background, performance, and feelings and rest by faith in God who justifies the ungodly through Christ.

We give you thanks for Grace Alone. If salvation is received by faith, then it depends not on human determination or exertion but on the grace of God alone. We praise you that nothing can be added to our salvation through our obedience and nothing can be taken away from our salvation through our disobedience. We praise you for the grace of God that has made us right with you and gives us power to obey you. Because Christ has made us his own, we press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

We give you thanks for Christ Alone. Wonderfully, all the benefits of the gospel strewn about but received freely through union with Christ. We praise you that we have been delivered from slavery in Adam, for in Adam all die. We praise you that we have been adopted as sons through Jesus Christ, for in Christ all shall be made alive—which the Spirit himself already bears witness to us.

Christ alone is our priest. Christ alone is our sacrifice. Christ alone is our Savior. Christ alone is our confidence and strength.

As we trust you and obey you, we confess our complete dependence upon Christ. We pray that you could cause Christ to dwell within us through the power of the Holy Spirit so that we may walk in him, rooted and built up in him.

We give all Glory to God Alone. Salvation belongs to the Lord! Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name be all glory! Our boast is in God alone, who chose before all time to save a people for himself through faith alone, by grace alone, in Christ alone!

Let us be a people that never forget that we are accepted by God through Christ alone and let us never tire of proclaiming the gospel of Christ to others!

Amen.
